Lin Far is Gone. No More. Los Desaparecidos

This is from a email I received today from my friend Lin Far.

The Disappeared
A disappearance occurs when an organization forces a person to vanish from  public view; and I have literally `been disappeared' from mydd. I still do not know why. I have written 2 posts to Todd Beeton and  1 post to Jerome Armstong  for an explanation, a reason, an answer. I have heard from no one.

I have blogged here in behalf of my candidate, on Tibet, and about Factory Workers at Sunrise. My last diary about "Typical White People" aroused a strong and long discussion of racism. It was vigorously attacked by many Obama supporters, all of whom still seem to be blogging freely on mydd.  I have opposed the candidate I do not support with ideas, facts, opinions and details. I have slandered no one. I have documented each and everthing I have written. From comments on my diaries it has been clear that devotees of the other candidate have at times been incensed by my diaries.  And in one comment I remember saying, "Do you not believe in free speech, in the marketplace of ideas?"
Image and video hosting by TinyPicsrc="http://i27.tinypic.com/2utjevd.jpg" border>

Apparently I have my answser. Censorship is a beguiling siren who sings her song to people on all sides of the political spectrum. And it does seem as if some form of censorship is operating with respect to my disappearance as well as that of others from the mydd diary list which as best I can understand it at this point in time includes: linfar universal, bud white and jfk(#s) Others have received warnings. I received no warning and no explanation.

So I wonder if this brief email by Todd Beeton  to someone who was wondering what was going on is a fair indication of what is happening:

With all the flame wars and Democrat on Democrat attacks, yes, we've
> gotten harder on diarists who attack, accuse, etc. If you'd like to
> send me some of the usernames of the folks you think were unfairly
> banned I'll take a look.
> You know what crap some Hillary supporters are writing about Barack
> on this site? It's disgusting and has no place on a Democratic blog,
> know what I mean?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

When I was a schoolgirl I memorized this little quotation by the Frenchman Voltaire:" I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend the death your right to say it." It has always seemed to me to describe the essence of free speech and American democracy. And I have often hated things that I have heard being said, but I have defended the right of the speaker to his/her views. In all my time at mydd I have never demanded someone be removed. I think this is wrong.  The mainstream media is biased, often inaccurate and in general now a propaganda tool, rather than a free press. The blogosphere is essential as an antidote to this situation. So  for us now to behave as if we believe it is right and democratic to silence voices with whom we disagree is very wrong. More than wrong. It is another little slide towards the totalitarian state we have all feared under 2 terms of George Bush.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I have only one more thing to say about this experience. And that is that  `being disappeared' is devastating. I am less enthusiastic, more tired and profoundly less hopeful about a better future today than I was yesterday. When I contributed my $35.00 to the support of this site, I had never given money for the upkeep of a website before. But I believed the people here were doing their best to provide a place for all democrats regardless of which candidate you support. I feel foolish about that also.

It is not for me to say that owners of a website cannot do as they please. But this website is called direct democracy. And I liked that name. I believe in what those words mean. So in this context I simply cannot understand why the owners of this site are now backing away from it because they do not like the content of some diaries. This is a censorship issue. It is not about insults and bad language or gratuitous remarks. It is about censoring diaries and diarists whose content you do not care for apparently all with regard to Obama.

Free speech is a lesson learned by every generation. I learned mine in the streets of UC Berkeley and in Chicago in 1968. I have fought for a free press for a long time. And I will not stop now. I wish the owners of this site would reinstate everyone who has been dismissed, issue a statement on the policy of this website with respect to content and standby their policy of issuing warnings when they feel that line has been breached.

Then I wouldn't have to feel so bad about my $35 and I could go on feeling that this is a website be proud of.

Maybe comparing Obama supporters to Hitler tipped the balance against him/her.  I dunno, but whenever you include Hitler in today's political discourse, you don't seek to have an actual discussion, just inflame.

got killed and their corpses thrown in the Atlantic from Argentinian AF planes.

That's a little bit more, shall we say, involved than being banned from a blog, no?

Linfar's first amendment rights are intact. What they guarantee is to be free from government limits on speech. The first amendment doesn't guarantee that someone gives others space to publish in their newspaper, blog, whatever.

And deciding what you want to publish in your venue is what freedom of the press is all about.

Newspapers can and do refuse to publish paid ads, whether commercial or political in nature and they don't publish every letter and op-ed submitted. They can have a political stance.  There have been Supreme Court decisions on this and it's clear that the PRESS has freedom to decide what to publish.

You know, I was trying to think of something snarky to say, but this is just really, really sad. You are literally stating that thousands of people will die if Barack Obama is nominated. (Or more specifically, unless he is "exposed and defeated.")

This is exactly what republicans say about Democrats. Remember ""I fear we may be hit again" if Kerry is elected? Your sorry scare tactics are an embarrassment.

And really, stop comparing linfar's banning with the mass murder of dissidents and political enemies. It's so overwrought it borders on the obscene.

Re: Don't even underestimate (2.00 / 2)

This diarist is a troll.  Google the following : "sad, so sad" mydd and then look at the cached pages (because many of the diaries are gone because of being banned).  The only people that ever used the term "its sad, so sad" over and over are either troll accounts that have been banned, a few that are still around, and this guy.

I'd bet money that the following accounts are the same person:

Pretty Boy Floyd the Outlaw http://pretty-boy-floyd-the-outlaw.mydd. com/
John Wesley Hardin was a Friend to the Poor http://john-wesley-hardin-was-a-friend-t o-the-poor.mydd.com/
Thomas J Jefferson http://thomas-j-jefferson.mydd.com/

There are a few others (like "dem dem") that trolled using the same term, but like I said earlier they already got banned.

I know you're not supposed to call out users in diaries, but these like a pretty obvious case of abuse here.

Nuts maybe (2.00 / 1)

But only in the sense of the delusion of certainty.  Plenty of others are just as delusional about their certainty and don't get called on it because they don't state the part about thousands will die.  THAT part is almost certainly true if they are indeed correct that they're backing the right hoss.

It's really, really important to get it right.

Censorship is now coming not from our government, but from our own blogs.  The Republicans have done well these last eight years lowering the dialogue and methods to where it's now spreading so that we're eating our own.

I'm sure they're appreciating the new "Repug-Channel" on the internet spreading around into the Democratic base.

No, what the Rs appreciate (none / 0)

are diaries that link Obama, Wright and 9/11. They certainly picked that one up often enough and widely enough. I'm sure they also appreciate diaries that compare Obama, unfavorably, to George Wallace. And they're probably tickled pink by calls to vote for John McCain over Obama, too.

And no, don't even start with the "but on Daily Kos, someone said blah blah" routine. If you dislike that, which I suspect you do, then don't turn around and celebrate it when it comes directed at a different target more to your liking.

I was wondering just how the Democrats would manage to throw away 2008. Thanks to the unhinged partisans of both candidates, I have my answer.

Re: Lin Far is Gone. No More. Los Desaparecidos (2.00 / 3)

If those who are banned want to be on line, they can start their own blog.  If enough people like it, they will attract a lot of reader and they can set their own rules about what will go on the blog.

The Supreme Court has always held that newspapers publishers have the constitutional right to decide what to publish, whether that's news, letters from readers, ads or opinion pieces. The same logic applies to blogs.

There are different First Amendment rules for broadcasters because the airwaves belong to the public.

But blogs, newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, etc. - these are controlled by someone, some sort of publisher. And under the first amendment, "freedom of the press" means that whoever is the publisher controls what gets in print.

You know what crap some Hillary supporters are writing about Barack on this site? It's disgusting and has no place on a Democratic blog, know what I mean?

From the guidelines:

Candidates and politicians are fair game (but that doesn't mean you can use inflammatory language against candidates).

Would "the crap some Hillary Supports are writing about Barack" be considered inflamatory?

Would the fact that the word crap was used infer that it was inflamatory?

Re: Lin Far is Gone. No More. Los Desaparecidos (2.00 / 1)

Until the Kossacks invaded...?

What does that even mean...?  Are we taking over?  Do we get property rights or is this a figurative thing?

And yes, I post at DailyKos as well.

Re: Lin Far is Gone. No More. Los Desaparecidos (2.00 / 3)

Give it up. Supporting Clinton and repeatedly trolling the site with character assassination smears against Obama are two entirely different things.  Linfar was rightfully banned for trolling.  That "Typical White People" diary was an ugly slimy piece of crap, not a legitimate political discourse.

The things that make my life more joy-filled are not what you listed.  One thing that might help the discourse on this and other sites is to realize that painting with a broad brush leaves a mess...

Re: Lin Far is Gone. (none / 0)

My user ID number is 4310.  Newly registered users are in the 30,000s.  I have been here since 2004.  I was here before I was on dailykos.  I liked this site because it focused on issues that other blogs glossed over.

Keep telling yourself that it's kossacks invading mydd.  The truth is, mydd has been around longer than dailykos has.  Most of the oldtimers here have accounts on both sites.  The blogs never grew this far apart until troublemakers posing as Clinton supporters turned it into Obama-hate 24/7.  Yes, they're called trolls.  Mydd never had a problem with them until readership exploded with this primary.

Re: Lin Far is Gone. No More. Los Desaparecidos (2.00 / 1)

This discourse on this site was, well, rough for the past couple of months.  It seems to have calmed down a little bit over the past couple of days.  I was not aware of a purge of any sort, but having seen some of the outrageous responses to basically reasonable posts, I cannot say I am surprised or all that saddened.

The vitriol demeans the entire discussion.  And the poster who pointed out that blogs are controlled and therefore not subject to First Amendment protections is correct.  I will defend anyone's right to say just about anything, but the hatred against fellow Democrats really does have to end.  The admins drew a line in the sand apparently.

"Los Desaparecidos" were killed... (2.00 / 1)

...linfar can't post diaries on myDD.com under that screenname anymore.

I spot a difference!

Also, there's no violation of the first amendment here.

Re: Lin Far is Gone. No More. Los Desaparecidos (2.00 / 3)

I'm new here.

I'm a refugee from The Big Orange in the Sky.  I left voluntarily in an effort to keep my self-respect intact.  As a Clinton supporter, I became increasingly unwilling to allow myself to be vilified even though I never leveled personal attacks on other posters.

I do believe it is possible to have a vigorous and even humorous debate with Democrats on the other side of the room and I think we can do it without calling each other names.

Obama supporters are my friends and allies, as long as they don't use invective against me or my candidate:  ie. Shillary, win at any cost, liar, corporate shill, yada, yada, yada.

It isn't that hard to be firm in one's beliefs and courteous at the same time.

Re: Lin Far is Gone. No More. Los Desaparecidos (2.00 / 1)

I thought Linfar's typical white person diary was over the top in its sentiment, but I did not think it was bannable. I don't mind debating what seems to be a non trollworthy but disaagreeable position. And what I dislike more is when diaries of banned people   disappear. If someone is clogging up the diary spaace, I wou;ld rather see a "chill out" slowdown on posting set by the admins.

Oh, I see the game now...post something deliberately controversial, then antagonize everyone who disagrees with you.

Universal, is that you?!?

Re: Lin Far is Gone. No More. Los Desaparecidos (2.00 / 0)

And now for Constitutional Law 101

The First Amendment reads:

"CONGRESS shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."  (emphasis added).

MyDD isn't Congress.

I hope this helps.

Re: Lin Far is Gone. No More. Los Desaparecidos (1.00 / 3)

Hypocritical arrogance in the manner of BO. He says he is the candidate of transparency -- that is the most laughable thing I've ever heard. He is a duplicitous and secretive and uses censorship with the same audacity of George Bush. That any progressive supports him is astounding to me, that so many of you do is frightening.

He'll never be elected because arrogant elitism doesn't reflect the America loving values of the labor wing of the Democratic party and many of us would prefer to endure 4 years of McCain then support a man who has been a 20 year member of an anti-American, anti-Semitic and racist church anywhere near the White House.

Rather than trying to win the nomination by censoring opposing opinion and denying votes in key electoral states, why not try to win the old fashioned way -- by appealing to voters?

Wait, WHAT? (2.00 / 1)

This is a private blog. It is not a public space. It is privately owned. It has its own rules, its own guidelines, that the site owner/s have every right to enforce. This is someone's digital home, that we have been kindly invited into.

"Censorship" is when government entities impede our right to speak. Even then, public places have etiquette and laws. That's why "incitement to riot" and "disturbing the peace" are considered crimes.

I feel damn lucky that the site owners let me post here, particularly because I do get heated up, and disagree with the site owner/s in some fundamental ways. But they are tough, they can take it, and they have class. It doesn't mean that they'll tolerate behavior that brings down the rep of the blog.

Carry on, and thanks for the horsebrutality-- er--hospitality.

Re: Lin Far is Gone. No More. Los Desaparecidos (2.00 / 1)

The fact is, they wouldn't have been banned if you all hadn't kept recommending their inflammatory diaries.  The fact that Universal kept getting on the rec list with his filth was probably what moved the admins to finally do something.

by Skaje on Thu Apr 03, 2008 at 02:38:00 AM EST

Too much censorship on mydd (none / 0)

I received a warning and  a temporary suspension for calling a Democratic governor from west a "fat idiot". Don't you think it is lot better than being called a "Judas"? Would I get a suspension if I called him "Judas"? LOL

You may not agree with What I say but don't forget I am a Democrat
